March 2001

By Mimi McDaniel Johnson

The height of your accomplishments will equal the depth of your convictions.

-William F. Scolavino

The ALAIR Executive Board met at the University of North Alabama on February 13, 2001. This meeting was very resourceful. Highlights of the meeting included the following:

  • The Board approved a new membership brochure/application design submitted by the publications coordinator, Member-at-Large Jeanette Newhouse.
  • Member-at-Large Dan Tennimon proposed several exciting initiatives to increase membership and improve member benefits in his capacity as Membership Coordinator. The Board accepted several recommendations, which included, providing Membership Certificates to all ALAIR members initially and thereafter, to new members. In addition, a proposed change to the ALAIR Constitution and By-Laws regarding adding two new categories of membership was approved for presentation to the membership for adoption at the annual conference (information is included in this newsletter).
  • Other Board action included offering ALAIR t-shirts for sale at $10.00 each. The t-shirts will be available on a pre-sale basis ONLY. You may purchase a t-shirt via the conference registration form.
  • To maintain the fiscal accountability of the organization, the Board has approved the review of our financial records for two calendar years with the accountant making recommendations on proper accounting procedures.

If the depth of our Vice President, Dr. Priscilla Holland, and the local arrangements committee's convictions truly indicate the height of their accomplishments, we can expect a very successful annual conference at the University of North Alabama in April.

While the proration of the State's budget is foremost on all of our minds, we hope that you will make every effort to attend the 15th Annual Conference in April. We encourage you to car pool and share resources as needed. We have several informative sessions planned to address Data Driven Decisions. The Thursday afternoon workshops will include two exciting presentations -- hands-on computer based SPSS workshop and IPEDS workshop. On Friday, Sandra Woodley, Director of Financial Affairs of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, will offer insight on the ACHE Faculty Database. I look forward to greeting you at the University of North Alabama on April 5 and 6, 2001 for our 15th Annual Conference.

SAIR 2001

October 13-16, 2001

It's also not to early to begin making plans for the SAIR 2001 Conference which be held October 13-16, 2001, at the Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City, Florida. The program will center on how to adapt to an ever more rapidly changing environment, evaluating and adopting the methods and technologies that will allow us to "be all we can be." Additionally, we will be instituting a special program focus on assessment, a topic near and dear to all our hearts.

I encourage you to make plans to attend SAIR '01 and to submit a program proposal when you receive the call in the near future. One special note on proposals: Because of the late timing of AIR's Annual Forum this year, deadline for SAIR submissions will fall prior to the Forum, so don't let the due date sneak up on you.

Most importantly, if you have any questions or would like to volunteer your services for this year's conference, please don't hesitate to contact me at lowthgs@auburn.edu or at 334-844-4765. So dust off that airbrushed t-shirt and plan to join us for a round of Goofy Golf in PC. -- Sam Lowther, Program Chair

PROPOSED CHANGES IN ALAIR MEMBERSHIP

Included in this newletter you will find proposed changes to the Constitution and By-Laws of the Association. The changes to the Constitution would divide our membership into three classifications: regular membership, student membership, and emeritus membership. We hope that by providing different membership categories ALAIR can both attract members earlier in their careers and maintain our connection with colleagues who are no longer actively employed. The By-Laws revision will allow variable membership charges to be assessed to the three classifications.

These changes will be on the agenda for discussion and voting at the Business Meeting in Florence on April 6.
